Decisions, decisions
There a host of decisions to be made when choose a wedding cake design. Here are the
basics.

The ultimate resource for planning Hamilton weddings
Mmmmmm….cake! With the
variety of wedding cakes
available today, the sky is the
limit! Bakeries and cake
shops throughout Hamilton
and Burlington offer unique
and inventive styles and
flavours which makes finding
your wedding cake baker a
breeze.

First off, determine a budget for your wedding cake and find out which wedding cake
bakers are in your price range.
Browse bridal magazines and websites for photos of weddings cakes that interest
you and bring pictures with you when meeting with the cake baker. Having a general
idea of style in mind is a great starting point. Are you looking for something traditional
and simple or trendy and glamorous? Maybe contemporary or classic is more your
style. Whatever your preference, this is a great basis for your cake designer when
planning your wedding cake.
Another important aspect to consider is the number of people you will be serving. If
you dream of a tiered wedding cake, but only have 40 - 50 people attending your
wedding, you can always get your cake baker to create false tiers (usually out of
Styrofoam) and decorate them like the rest of the cake.
You’ll also want to determine if you prefer a square, round, rectangular or heart-
shaped. Other decisions you will be faced with include cake flavours and fillings (he
loves vanilla, you love chocolate), cake colours (really, the sky is the limit here),
décor (think ribbons, bows or flowers…maybe even all three!) and toppers
(monograms, flowers or your traditional “couple” statues are all very popular). Now
comes the fun part…the taste test!
to check with the venue where you are hosting your wedding reception. Some banquet
halls prefer that you purchase your cake from them, others will allow you to bring it in
from an outside vendor. A minor detail in the grand scheme of things, but if you are very
specific in what you are looking for in your wedding cake make sure that the banquet hall
can provide it, otherwise it doesn’t hurt to negotiate on this. When it comes to weddings,
most places are willing to offer a little flexibility.
Have Your Cake & Eat It Too!
You will want to sample cakes from your chosen
vendors and review pictures of the wedding cakes they
have created. You can even ask to see one in person
if they have any upcoming weddings.
Another consideration when it comes to cakes, be sure
Happy Anniversary!
A trend in recent years is freezing a small piece of the
wedding cake for the newlyweds to enjoy on their first
anniversary. Some wedding cake bakers will even do up
miniature versions of the real thing just for this occasion. While
it doesn’t seem like much at the time, you are sure to
appreciate it with a chance to celebrate one year later.
